Norine V.'s Story
January 17, 2009 marks my ninth year of being a cancer-fighting champion.
I am A REAL LIVE PINK BAT. I am the living breathing version of Major League Baseball's wooden pink bat that is used on Mother's Day.
Just ask Louisville Slugger. Okay just ask Rick Redman, the VP of Corporate Communications for LS or his major league assistant Mary Frances!
On Monday, March 9, 2009 my husband Ed and I went to Lakeland, Florida to the Detroit Tigers spring training facility. Why? BECAUSE THEY INVITED ME TO COME!
I wore my Sandvipers baseball uniform and along with 250 young male hopefuls, we all tried out to make the team. I was the oldest baseball player at 51 the rest were from 18-25.
Glen Ezell, the Director of Player Development for the Tigers, told me that my age and gender have absolutely nothing to do with my ability to play professional baseball.
Dan Lunetta, the Director of Minor League Operations for the Tigers, sent me a personal letter in November 2008 inviting me to tryout for the team. That's why I went. He along with Tigers Major League President Dave Dombrowski thought it would be great for me to attend.

lay as great as I did at first base. I smoked them along with five other first basemen. We took on the whole infield and we smoked them good!
There are a ton of articles about my tryout on the internet. Just search my name and the team for "Norine Rathbone Detroit Tigers". Read them all because they are just awesome what was written. The Tampa Bay News 9 came exclusively to film me at the tryout. I'm on their website too under the Sunday, March 15, 2009 news.
Who knew that I would even be considered for professional baseball. I thought my sports career was winding down, now it's just beginning thanks to the Detroit Tigers management. No I didn't get a contract but I did get something better. Something that no multi-million contract could afford--I GOT THEIR RESPECT!
My ultimate athletic goal is to be the real live pink bat who swings the MLB wood-painted bat on Mother's Day in a Major League game.
Go to MLB.com and call or write Commissioner Selig telling him it's the right thing to do to sign a breast cancer survivor baseball player for the day for one inning, for one plate appearance on Mother's Day. Let's start A REAL LIVE PINK BAT CAMPAIGN.
